House of 1833 Bed & Breakfast

Visit Website | 860-536-6325 | innkeeper@houseof1833.com

Built in 1833 by Elias Brown, banker and relative of one of the current owners, the House of 1833 is a 19th century Greek revival mansion and national landmark masterpiece on three beautifully wooded and landscaped acres of gardens and fountains.

We always include our world-famous full New England country-gourmet candlelight breakfasts and feature a seasonal full size swimming pool surrounded by lush perennial gardens and fountains...dotted with sun cots, chairs, and eight glass tables with big blue market umbrellas. Relax...swim...bask...and enjoy.

History of the House of 1833

The House of 1833 was originally built as a second home by Elias Brown, Esq. - a graduate of Brown University, lawyer, member of the New London bar, President of Mystic Bank, and relative of one of the current owners. This historic property from 1833 - previously referred to as the "Elias Brown House" - was inspired by his many travels abroad. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Landmarks and is considered to be an architectural masterpiece in the state of Connecticut. The all-white, Greek Revival mansion from the 19th-century is surrounded by three acres of lush English meadow garden and woodland and is located in the heart of Old Mystic.

The current owners - Evan Nickles and Robert Palmer Bankel - have a great passion for architecture and design which led them to collecting. Their collection has filled the rooms of the House of 1833 with paintings, fine china, furniture, and other knickknacks. The inn contains many unique antiques inside and out. Just ask Evan or Robert about a particular piece and they will surely have a story to tell. These antiques have been collected over the years and often attract professional collectors to come to the house to view these treasures. Along with the House of 1833, Nickels and Bankel own Fantastic Umbrella Factory - a unique restaurant and gallery on a farm in Charlestown, Rhode Island. They also previously owned the Emporium - a quirky gift and antique shop in downtown Mystic. Nickles and Bankel live onsite in a wing of the house full-time with their dogs and take great pride in caring for their guests of the bed & breakfast.

Breakfast at the inn is a well-planned elaborate event with an array of freshly-prepared, gourmet items - many of which are made with ingredients from the onsite garden. It has been said that if a guest requests hot chocolate, the owners will go to the trouble of melting a solid chocolate bar and blending it with fresh, hot milk. None of the powdered mix here! Be sure not to miss the freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies that Bankel makes most afternoons. They are delicious and legendary among the staff and guests. Get there quick though because they usually don't last more than a half hour.

We Highly Recommend This B&B

"Our 2-night stay at House of 1833 was wonderful. We loved the house full of antiques, beautiful lamps and collection of clocks and model ships. Evan and Robert are gracious hosts and served up a delicious breakfast both mornings. When we arrived, they surprised us with a bouquet of flowers, balloons, a "Happy Anniversary" banner, tiramisu and sherry to celebrate our anniversary. This was very generous and made us feel welcomed and special. There is also a lovely garden surrounding the pool and the outside eating area. We highly recommend this B&B."

The Inn at Ocean Avenue

Visit Website | 860-574-9555 | office@innatoceanavenue.com

Feel what it was like living a society life in pre-WWI New England. Our bed and breakfast is a modern restoration of a great house built in 1914. Set on the property's original 4 acres, the house is minutes from beaches, the Eugene O'Neil Theater Center and Harkness Park, a popular wedding venue. Mystic Connecticut attractions and the Mohegan Sun Casino are about 20 minutes away.

History of the Inn at Ocean Avenue

The house that would eventually become the Inn at Ocean Avenue was built in 1914. At the time that Allan and Sharon Goldfarb bought the house, it was known as the Isabel Chapman House, and it needed substantial time, care and attention. The Goldfarbs rose to the challenge. The house now stands as a beautiful, modern – yet historic – home open for guests to stay the night, or several nights, in New London, CT.

As seems to be the case with many bed and breakfast owners and innkeepers, the opportunity to restore an historic, neglected building to its former glory came unexpectedly and lodged itself firmly in the minds of the Goldfarbs. They first encountered the property on a trip to Mystic, CT. Locals pointed them towards New London and Ocean beach when the couple asked where they could find local beaches. They found wonderful beaches and an equally stunning house.

New York City natives Allan and Sharon were surprised by the feel of New London. The rich culture, great restaurants and friendly community all spoke to them. Still, they had no plans to buy the red brick Dutch Colonial; it was a great deal more expensive than they thought it should be. It quickly faded from mind.

The next time Allan checked the price, he was elated to find that the asking price had dropped to nearly half of the price it had been listed at earlier. This was enough for Allen to decide to go see the property for himself. It was in rough shape, to say the least. Despite its state of disrepair, the Goldfarbs bought it with the idea that it might make a nice inn someday. After more than a year of renovations, the home was finally complete. During this time the idea to turn the home on ocean avenue into the Inn at Ocean Avenue was born. Both the Goldfarbs were comfortable working with people and were great cooks, too. Opening up a bed and breakfast seemed like a great option for them.

The outpouring of support from the community made the opening of the inn a huge success. The local chamber of commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony that was attended by the mayor and over 100 other people. In the short time that the inn has been open, it's hosted hundreds of guests from across the country – and the world. Those who have had the pleasure of staying at the Inn at Ocean Avenue and meeting Allan and Sharon Goldfarb have had nothing but good things to say and can't wait to come back!

Beautiful and Welcoming Retreat

"Allan and his family have created a beautiful and welcoming retreat at The Inn at Ocean Avenue. They are incredibly accommodating and kind. Our room was comfortable and updated, but still exuded old time charm. The Inn is conveniently located to Harkness Memorial State park as well as other local attractions. We can't wait to come back! Thanks so much for your kindness and hospitality, Allan!"

Mermaid Inn of Mystic

Visit Website | 860-287-4246 | mermaidinn@sbcglobal.net

Mermaid Inn of Mystic is located in the heart of Southeastern Connecticut with a rich offering of history, shopping and entertainment opportunities for visitors. Historic Downtown Mystic is a short walk away with its many shops and boutiques as well as the ever-popular Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium. A short drive will take you to two of the most exciting casinos in the world - the Mohegan Sun and Mashantucket Pequot Resort and Casino.

Mermaid Inn of Mystic is an enchanting 1843 Victorian Italianate located in historic downtown Mystic. An easy stroll to waterfront, shops and galleries, River cruises, restaurants, Amtrak Train Station, and Mystic Seaport Museum. Good food, thoughtful amenities, and a relaxing atmosphere.

History of Mermaid Inn of Mystic

The minute you arrive at the Mermaid Inn of Mystic, you can park your car and walk away from it for the remainder of your stay. The location is so closely located to the heart of downtown Mystic that it's just a short walk to many things to do. When you head out for a stroll of the town, it's just a quick six minute walk to Mystic Seaport, seven minutes to the Amtrak train station and less than two miles to the Mystic Aquarium. Visitors to the inn usually travel in from New York City on the train and love the peaceful charm of the Mermaid Inn and the surrounding garden. Guests say that the lovely porch and grounds are the perfect spot sit and relax.

The owner - Josephine Guarnaccia - originally bought the property 23 years ago. She had known that she wanted to own a bed and breakfast for many years. As a resident of the area, she drove by one day and saw that the property was for sale. She decided on the spot to buy it and make her goal of ownership a reality.

Turning the historic mansion from a single-family home into what it is today was no small feat. It took two years just to get the transient resident permit from the city that would allow her to operate the home as a bed and breakfast. Then it took an additional three years for a total of five to renovate the home - while maintaining the historic original footprint - so that each guest room would have its own private bathroom.

This charming inn is named to remind guests of the maritime community of Mystic. Guests are welcome - and encouraged - to tickle the ivory of the inn's baby grand piano if the mood strikes them. Each of the colorful guest rooms has been decorated with original artwork created by local artist Jennifer Wolcin.

Breakfast at the inn gives you the full opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the property and the gardens. Enjoy dining on the inn's wraparound porch or covered gazebo during the summer months. The meal is a spectacular event with three courses and includes fresh baked goods, coffee, and tea. In the afternoon, guests can stop in and grab fresh baked cookies compliments of Josephine.

Cozy B&B in a Quaint Town

"Josephine and her team took great care of my friends and I when we booked out all four rooms in this cosy B&B for a new year getaway. The breakfast menu is really special and prepared with love and care - make sure to try all the delicious offerings at least once! This property was really fun because we had the place to ourselves and were able to take over the meals area and shared lounge/piano. Extremely convenient as it is close to Mystic train station, and walking distance to the main strip of shops."

Old Lyme Inn

Visit Website | 860.434.2600| events@oldlymeinn.com

Nestled in Old Lyme's historic art district, renovated and restored in 2012, the Old Lyme Inn features 13 beautiful guest rooms, indoor and outdoor dining and a world class jazz club; The Side Door. Conveniently located halfway between New York and Boston, Old Lyme is home to museums, galleries, specialty shops and beaches.

History of Old Lyme Inn

The unique history of Old Lyme, Connecticut and the Old Lyme Inn begins in 1899 when Henry Ward Ranger, a prominent landscape artist, arrived and decided that this picturesque seaside village would make the perfect place for an artist's colony. As luck would have it, Florence Griswold, daughter of wealthy sea captain Robert Griswold, was looking to take on boarders. The Large house, originally commissioned by her father, had become too expensive to maintain on her own. In no time at all, her home was full of some of the best impressionist artists in the country. The Lyme Art Colony was born.

Just down the street from the Florence Griswold House was the farmhouse that would eventually become the Old Lyme Inn. As the colony grew, and Old Lyme drew more and more artists from around the country, the horse barn on the back of the property became an art studio where some of the best impressionist art of its time was created.

The colony thrived for nearly three decades before the death of Florence Griswold caused it to fade away. This wasn't the end of well-known visitors to Old Lyme. In the 1940s, Jackie Kennedy, who would go on to be First Lady of the United States, took horseback riding lessons at the farm that would later become the Old Lyme Inn.

Fast forwarding a few years, the current owners decided to remodel a part of the Old Lyme Inn so that a jazz club could be constructed. The SideDoor opened in 2011. Since its opening, prominent jazz musicians such as Ralph Peterson, Delfeayo Marsalis, and Bill Charlap have played on its stage.

Exceeded my Expectations!

"Clean and spacious rooms with spacious areas to socialize safely outdoors. Exceeded my expectations! Charming decor and comfortable arrangement all around and convenient location for our needs. Coordination with staff was very helpful in planning several guests check in, and they were quick to help when I accidentally left my charger behind. Would highly recommend! Wonderful stay."

Captain Grant's Bed & Breakfast

Visit Website | l 860-303-8748 | stay@captaingrants.com

Captain Grant's is a historic inn with old-world charm. Enjoy the four acres of well-manicured yard from the back deck while you eat a hearty, homemade breakfast, or admire the antiques and decor of the sitting room or the game room as you stay warm by the wood-burning fireplace.

Looking to have a paranormal experience? Captain Grant's Bed & Breakfast is known as "Connecticut's Most Haunted Bed and Breakfast!"

A History of Captain Grant's Bed & Breakfast

Located in the historic village of Poquetanuck within the town of Preston, Connecticut, the family home built by Captain William Avery Gonzales Grant in 1754 stands as one of the oldest preserved buildings of its time. The story of the Grant family took a sad turn when, at the age of just 32, Captain Grant died at sea off the shore of Cape Hatteras. He left behind his wife, Mercy Adelaide Grant, his two children, and one unborn child. Captain Grant's wife lived the remainder of her life in the home before passing away in the 1800s.

The story doesn't end there. Many say that Mercy continues to wait for Captain Grant to return home. Captain Grant's is said to be haunted by the wife of the late sea captain, among other ghostly beings. In addition, the original town cemetery dating all the way back to the 1600s can be found just behind the house, and the modern cemetery dating from the 1800s is found just in front of it. Carol, one of the inn's owners, likes to joke that she has more dead than living neighbors.

Carol bought Captain Grant's over 25 years ago and lovingly restored the dilapidated building, turning it into a beautiful historic bed and breakfast that has been serving guests for over two decades. Guests come from all over to experience the paranormal, and most leave having experienced the unexplained. Common occurrences include hearing footsteps in the attic or taps on guest room doors. Disembodied voices are also captured frequently. Over the years, Captain Grant's has gained notoriety, appearing in TV on Home and Garden Television and A&E's Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal. It's been mentioned by a variety of news outlets, too, including USA Today, CNN, and others.

Captain Grant's is a great place to find a ghost, and it's also a great place to find suburb service and comfort. Carol and Ted keep the inn stocked with beer, wine, soda, and dessert free for guests to enjoy. Guests can even enjoy a sip of crème sherry from the carafes in their guest rooms! Even if you don't meet a ghost, you'll meet Carol and Ted, gracious, welcoming hosts dedicated to making your stay at Captain Grant's out of this world!

Carol wrote a book, The Ghosts of Captain Grant's Inn, about her own encounters with the supernatural both growing up and as the owner of Captain Grants. It's an interesting addition to a stay at Captain Grant's.

It Was All a Wonderful Stay

"I can not say enough wonderful things about this place! The hospitality, the food, the guests ,the atmosphere, the owners, it was all a wonderful experience. Breakfast was amazing all the way around. Family style breakfast with the all the Inn guests. Real people talking and eating at one table! No cell phones, just nice conversation with people. We will definitely be back. Thank you so much Carol and Ted! This place is a real gem."

Heavitree of Griswold Bed and Breakfast

Visit Website | 1-(860)-884-0936| heavitreebb@gmail.com

The original structure that has since become the Heavitree Bed and Breakfast was originally a 17th century tavern located in Rhode Island. Working with a specialist in historic structure dismantling and rebuilding, Charlotte was able to bring over the saltbox style tavern from Rhode Island.Once this labor of love was finally completed, Charlotte began collecting 18th century antiques to furnish her new home. She eventually managed to fill the entire house with period appropriate furniture, decorations, and hardware. She even has antiques built by her very own ancestors in her home.

Charlotte's guests enjoy relaxing by one of several fireplaces built out of original Rhode Island stone and sampling her scrumptious breakfasts, which she makes fresh for her guests each morning.

If you ever get the chance to visit this special historic building, don't let it slip by! It's a special place you won't soon forget.

History of Heavitree of Griswold Bed and Breakfast

The family of Charlotte Geer, proprietor of the Heavitree Bed and Breakfast, immigrated from Heavitree, England in 1635 and settled on a plot of farmland in 1700. The name of the bed and breakfast pays homage to that fact.

The original structure that has since become the Heavitree Bed and Breakfast was originally a 17th century tavern located in Rhode Island that was scheduled to be torn down to make room for new construction. It just so happened that Charlotte was looking for a historic farmhouse to compliment her family's historic farmland. The tavern is the fruit of over two years of searching. Working with a specialist in historic structure dismantling and rebuilding, Charlotte was able to bring over the saltbox style tavern from Rhode Island to the family farm, a painstaking process that cost much time, money, and effort for all involved.

Once this labor of love was finally completed, Charlotte began collecting 18th century antiques to furnish her new home. She eventually managed to fill the entire house with period appropriate furniture, decorations, and hardware. She even has antiques built by her very own ancestors in her home. She believes that, "The house should suit the land, and the furnishings should suit the house." Her visitors all agree that visiting the Heavitree Bed and Breakfast is akin to stepping 300 years into the past.

There are twelve rooms, including 4 bedrooms, 3 of which have a private bathroom. There's even central air, WiFi, large rooms for private parties, an 18th century Parlor Room, Dining Room, Keeping Room, Tap Room, and a Great Room. The restored farmhouse now totals 4,780 square feet.

Beautiful Getaway Spot

"Heavitree Bed and Breakfast is a beautifully restored 18th century tavern. The details in the house are incredible and the workmanship that went into it is flawless. It is immaculately clean and has all the modern conveniences needed for a comfortable stay. Charlotte, the owner, is a perfectly charming host. She was warm, welcoming, and accommodating. A comfy bed, beautiful linens and amazing grounds made this a delightful stay.
I highly recommend this beautiful Inn. My husband and I will definitely be back."
