Best B&B Ever!

"BEST B&B EVER!!! My wife and I spent the night at Mary and Jim's house and were welcomed with open arms. Nice and quiet. There's lots of places around, which is great. We has a weekend there but could only stay one night because our son did not want to stay at home by himself but we are going back for a full weekend. The breakfast was amazing, oh don't forget to try the butter, it's out of this world!!!! Thanks again Marry and Jim see you guys in the spring."

History

The story of the Captain Stannard House starts with Captain Elbert Stannard, who, at the age of 14, left home and started his career on the seas aboard the ship Hector for his first deep sea voyage as a seaman traveling to Liverpool and other European ports.

His career advanced quickly. He rose through the ranks until he became master of the ship Tuskina, which he sailed to San Francisco. In 1859, Captain Stannard sailed his own vessel, Daniel Webster, to Shanghai and Yokohama, Japan. His wife, who he had recently married, was the first American woman to visit that part of the country.

After owning and selling several more boats, Captain Stannard took part in a historic event: he commanded the ship Scotland, an iron auxiliary screw steamer and the first steamship to travel between China and San Francisco.

At this point, Captain Stannard's exploits had earned him a respected reputation as a captain and businessman. At the close of the Civil War, he bought several well-known vessels that had been used in the war. He dismantled and preserved parts of these ships, which are no doubt housed in historical collections. At the close of his career he moved to Brooklyn, NY and shortly thereafter to his hometown of Westbrook, Connecticut where in 1872 he had built the home that is now known as the Captain Stannard House.

Later, After Captain Stannard moved to Port Washington, Long Island, his home became the Menunketesuck Inn, the St. Charles Inn, the Olde English Tavern, and Holly's Hotel & Seafood Restaurant. In 1931, Holly's Barn was added and used as a community gathering place, workforce housing, and Kingsley Hall dormitory.

The historic house caught fire in 1971 and the town took possession of it. They considered destroying it and building a library in its place, but it was eventually sold as a private residence. Several owners later, it became the Captain Stannard Bed & Breakfast Country Inn. In 2004-2005, the house was meticulously restored inside and out, including a historically accurate wrap around porch and completed landscaping.

Each room in this historic house is named after a significant event or person in the history of the house and it's owners. The current owners, Jim and Mary, continue to welcome guests into their home and share with them the special history that can be found in the Captain Stannard House.

"spent a week at this wonderful inn and cannot reccommend it highly enough, from Beach to shops everything is close, the rooms are clean and well maintained and look great, all staff were friendly and helpful, Mary and Jim are really nice people and hosts, Breakfast was always worth getting up for, when next over from the UK and in this region this is where i will stay."
